Out with the Old...In with the New

Before

All the "stuff" I removed

So last week I decided to completely get rid of all of the "stuff" that has piled up in my life over the past 8 years. This includes but is not limited to the following: sorority paraphernalia, trash, broken jewelry, old papers to keep, silly picture frames, and so much more. I decided to start with my desk and after some intense cleaning I now have a beautiful desk that is dusted and cleaned out and with the extra space I was able to make a jewelry armoire.

The NEW desk...note the button dish in the far Left

While cleaning, I did find one thing that really made me smile, and that was my very own button dish. For my high school graduation I received a dish with antique and ornate detail. It's not really my style, but then after cleaning and finding a million random buttons, I decided to combine the two and make a button dish. I also feel that 1. every girl needs a button dish in her life and 2. it shouldn't be something modern or even match the style of your life. I really feel like it should reflect who you are and where you have come from. For me that would be coming from a SMALL town in Indiana being raised on conservative values. As I make my move to the big city I will definitely be taking my button dish with me to remind me of where I have come from and who I was and bring me back down to earth.

The finished product!

As I finished the challenge of my room I realized how refreshed I felt. It was like closing a book from my life thus far and starting a new one. The new one being my life post-graduation and my journey as I enter the real world. Throwing all of my "stuff" away felt symbolic as I packed up my previous memories and now have a clean slate and new canvas to color a brand new world onto. Throughout the whole process it was incredible to go back and remember all of the adventures I had while growing up, and now...2 trash bags later I am ready to start my own life and make the new memories that will come with it!

Bad date anyone?

Why is it that for the single lady when it rains it pours? The men always seem to come around in packs. When one calls they all call. Just recently, I was talking with a sorority sister of mine, who is currently experiencing this. My friend Mary* just moved to Nashville and is loving it. According to her this city is full of gorgeous southern boys! As we're talking about her current prospects she tells me about a date she had recently.

The guy comes and picks her up and instead of her buzzing his vehicle into her gated complex, she comes in by himself and doesn't even come to the door to greet her. While in the car they start conversation with each other and realize the only thing they have in common is their knowledge on how to start an i-v on someone. He was in the army and she is a nurse. They continue the convo and he then asks if she had ever done ecstasy. WHAT??? ARE YOU SERIOUS? As if that wasn't bad enough-they end up going to Steak-n-Shake for dinner after a game of put-put golf in which SHE had to pay for. While S&S is a great place to dine after a late concert or busy weekend, they do not offer very many vegetarian dishes, as Mary is a no-meat kinda girl, and it's now being placed in the fast food category, amongst various restaurant comparisons. The date finally ended with Mary darting out of the car and continuously now avoiding his text messages. The sad thing is he probably is one of those guys who thought the date went really well and would love to see her again!

Despite the awful date , like I said earlier when it rains it pours, she had another date on Thursday. I'm sure you are all thinking what I was when I first heard the story, and it's probably something along the line of, "any date after that one could be considered a great date." Well it actually was. They went to a lovely dinner with great conversation that he paid for, very appropriate first date and have a lot in common.

So for all the singles out there, I'm sure you all have a bad date story that is probably pretty comparable, however, keep at it. There are more fish in the sea and remember, when it rains it pours, so chances are one will come along very soon; either while you're already talking to a few guys or starting to get serious because let's face it, that's just the way the game is played.

*For the sake of her sanity, the name has been changed. =)

I came across this quote on Fashionista that just made me laugh and think how typical in fashion. Enjoy!

the power of being a woman

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...

enough money within her control to move out
and rent a place of her own,
even if she never wants to or needs to...
something perfect to wear if the employer,
or date of her dreams wants to see her in an hour....

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...

a youth she's content to leave behind....
a past juicy enough that she's looking forward to
retelling it in her old age....
a set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra...
one friend who always makes her laugh... and one who lets her cry...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .

a good piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in her family....
eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems,
and a recipe for a meal,
that will make her guests feel honored...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ..

a feeling of control over her destiny...
how to fall in love without losing herself..

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

how to quit a job,
break up with a lover,
and confront a friend without;
ruining the friendship....

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW......

when to try harder... and WHEN TO WALK AWAY...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

that she can't change the length of her calves,
the width of her hips, or the nature of her parents..
that her childhood may not have been perfect...but it's over...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

what she would and wouldn't do for love or more...
how to live alone... even if she doesn't like it...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW.. .

whom she can trust,
whom she can't,
and why she shouldn't take it personally...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

where to go...
be it to her best friend's kitchen table...
or a charming Inn in the woods...
when her soul needs soothing...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

What she can and can't accomplish in a day...
a month...and a year...

The most influential woman I know

Time for a Change...

Forever 21 Nail Polish-I have it in Seaside Turquoise

As you can probably tell by my previous posts I am extremely happy that summer is here. Finally! Lifeguarding has been fine and I have been getting really tan! Unfortunately the bad thing about lifeguarding is that I am stuck to wearing black mesh shorts and a shirt that says, 'LIFEGUARD." Not the most attractive outfit. However, I have found some way to even accessorize this, as well.

Mid-week I chose to change my nail polish from tomato red to a beautiful seaside turquoise. I have to say, this has been a huge hit! Not only do I love the way my toe nail polish looks against the clear blue pool water (as I sit in the lifeguard stand and twirl my whistle) but I have received many compliments.

So the next time you're feeling like you need to spruce up an outfit, try a polish change to give your look a fresh, new, vivid feeling.

Releasing with a Run

Well, the other day I did it. I have finally reached the point where working out is back to how it used to be. By this I mean, I am able to run and enjoy it or head to the gym and kill a bunch of time knowing I'm getting my body back into shape. After 3 attempts to run for 2o minutes without stopping, on my short path, the other day I was able to complete my short path run and feel good afterwards. The other day, I had so much on my mind I chose to go for a run and attempt my long path. It takes about 40 minutes for me to complete my long path and goes around our neighborhood.

It's been a rough couple of weeks for me and since graduation it has been a whirlwind of emotions and the best way to pump some quick endorphins has been running. I love the feeling when I am not thinking about anything, my legs become numb, and my music is rocking. I can run for what seems like forever. However, it's nothing huge like miles upon miles, but it's enough for me to feel accomplished.

Yay for summer!

for now...

Goals for Summer

Well school is over and I am now a college graduate living at home. :( Still looking for a job I have decided I need to get my act together. Unfortunately, this past year was very disappointing, to myself, because I developed some lazy habits that definitely need to be broken. With summer quickly approaching, I have decided that it's time to start getting back into shape and back into a healthier me!

My new plan for Summer includes the following,

1. Cut back on the amounts of meat I eat. Become vegetarian again!
Last year, when in NYC, I, cold-turkey, cut meat out of my diet. It was great. I felt better, had more energy, and became healthier. I was pretty good about this for 9 months.
2. Start running at least 3x/wk & working out MORE!
I used to be really good about working out. When in high school I was always conscious of staying in shape, in college I would attend the gym at least 1 or 2 times a week. This past semester I hardly worked out at all. :(
3. Save money for NYC
If August comes, and I haven't found a job in NYC yet, I am taking the risk and moving out to NYC. I will find someway to make everything work and really have no plan at this point, but I know I will need money to do it.

for now...
